Magi

Mike flung himself into the blackness, flailing arms aflame.

“No, Mads, not that way!” he yelled. “I won’t be able to find you.” But Maddy had already disappeared. Overnight, she seemed to have mastered Connected Reality, moving with the speed and finesse of a veteran Player.

When had she learned to manipulate her aRWI like that? Maddy’s choice of avatar surprised Mike, too. A blue angel. No, not an angel. Angel wings were feathered, but Maddy’s were leathery and massive like a pterodactyl’s. And her eyes, round and bulbous like an insect’s. But her Player’s face looked like Maddy’s—a little thinner, maybe. Her skin was smooth, impossibly smooth and all her Rust pockmarks were gone.

He was chasing her through a museum. Paintings strung like tantalizing clues. Each time he reached the next one, only the shimmering hint of Maddy remained. But he knew she was close. Knew that if he could only move a little faster, he would find her.

Another painting at the end of a long, dark tunnel. He knew this one. Three kings. The magi. No, not magi, Magigate. They all looked like manifestations of the Captain. How odd.

And then Maddy was gone. The realization hit him like a shockwave. She passed through the painting, into her art, gone forever.

“Maddy, no!’ he cried.

Mike awoke in a pool of sweat. He shook and whispered Maddy’s name, over and over. He was afraid he might never see her again.
